The Criterion and the Stone

I · Regulation or avoidance?

Every technique on this expedition can be used in two completely different ways, and the difference is not in the technique. It is in what you are using it for. This is the station where that question gets asked properly, because the next one asks you to start naming your own crutches — and this is the question you name them with.

Am I using this technique to keep acting despite the anxiety – or to avoid starting until the anxiety is gone?

A technique turns into avoidance when it is used under a rule like: "I can't enter the situation until I have completely calmed down." Or: "If the anxiety has started, I must remove it immediately, or something dangerous will happen."

In that case the brain may learn not that the situation is safe, but that you only got out of it thanks to the breathing, the relaxation, the checking, or some other crutch. That can block the more useful lesson: I am able to be in this situation even while the anxiety is present. Research on safety behaviours links them to a weaker violation of anxious expectations and to lower tolerance of distress.

But if a person uses breathing or grounding in order to stay in contact with what is happening and keep acting, that is not necessarily avoidance:

"I take a few slow exhales and go into the shop anyway."
"I notice the anxiety, bring my attention back to the room, and continue the conversation."
"I am not trying to reach zero anxiety; I am supporting myself while I take an important step."

Here the technique is support, not a condition for safety.

It matters not to build a new rigid rule out of this – "so now I must never relax" is another form of control. The question is not whether to use relaxation at all, but whether it turns into a mandatory safety ritual.

Relaxation is an option, not a requirement.

A test you can run today: take the thing you were going to do anyway, and do it without the technique first. If that is unthinkable, the technique is no longer a technique.

One Crutch a Day

The Envelope & Uncertainty

There are things you do to make a frightening situation bearable. Checking. Rehearsing the sentence. Sitting near the door. Texting someone from the queue. They work, which is exactly why you still have them.

Field task · one a day, for a week

Each day, catch one and write it down. One line in the notebook: what you did, and what it made easier.

Like this: "Read the message four times before sending — so it could not be misunderstood." "Took the long way round — so I would not pass the shop." A verb and a reason, nothing more.

You are not giving any of them up this week. Taking them away early tends to backfire, and you will need the list whole at the pier – you cannot leave behind something you have not yet seen.

Noticing and removing are two different jobs. This week is the first one.

I · The sealed prediction

Not-knowing is only bearable when it eventually turns into knowing, and the fastest way to make that happen is to write the prediction down before the answer arrives. Written afterwards, memory quietly edits it; written before, it cannot be edited at all.

So: one situation coming up this week that you are uneasy about. What do you expect to happen, and how strongly do you believe it. Then the envelope closes for seven days and opens on its own.

Zero means you do not believe it at all. A hundred means you are certain. Most predictions that frighten us sit somewhere in the eighties.

It opens by itself. Nothing is required from you until then — in particular, do not go and check whether you were right.

One envelope proves nothing. Four or five of them, kept over a couple of months, are the only evidence about your own forecasting you will ever have that you did not make up afterwards.

II · Tolerance of uncertainty

Most of what the mind calls danger is simply not-knowing. This is the muscle that carries it.

And there is a disciplined version of what you have just done with the envelope: a prediction written down before, then checked after. The full method is taught at the pier, where you will have something to use it on.

There are things you do to make a frightening situation bearable. Checking that you locked the door. Rehearsing the first sentence before you call. Sitting near the exit. Texting someone from the queue. Arriving forty minutes early. Keeping a bottle of water in your hand at the party.

They work — that is exactly why you still have them, and why they are so hard to see. A thing that helps does not look like a problem. The criterion from the station before this one is what tells them apart: support, or a condition of entry.

Each day this week, catch one of your own and write it down. One line in the notebook, in two halves: what I did and what it made easier. Nothing is given up this week, and that is not a soft start. Removing them early tends to backfire, and the list has to be whole by the time you reach the pier — you cannot leave behind something you have not yet seen.

Why understanding does not remove them

People ask this with real irritation: I know perfectly well it is nonsense, so why do I still check?

Because of how the checking was learned. A behaviour rewarded every single time is easy to drop — the day it stops working, you notice. A behaviour rewarded only sometimes is the slowest of all to fade. Your checking helps occasionally, and occasionally is enough to keep it for years. It is the mechanism of a slot machine, which pays out neither every time nor on a schedule, and is therefore impossible to walk away from.

So understanding has nothing to do with it. You are not dealing with stupidity; you are dealing with the most durable form of learning there is.

And the other extreme is no better. Constant monitoring of a threatening situation raises anxiety, while ignoring threat-related information lowers it in the moment and leaves you less prepared for actual harm. The question is not whether to check. It is whether you can stop once checking has stopped giving you new information.

Noticing and removing are two different jobs. This week is the first one.

The Inventory of Twelve

Field task · twelve episodes, written by hand

The whole sector has been one operation, done on different material: telling apart what used to be a single undivided background. Tension from ease. One feeling from another. Support from a crutch.

This is the last of them, and it is written rather than watched. In the paper notebook, write down twelve episodes in which the anxiety was trying to protect you. Not more than twelve.

Beside each one, a single line: what it was guarding you from. One line, not an analysis. When the list ends, it ends – we do not come back to it today.

If you notice that you are going round the same episode for the twelfth time, put a full stop on it and move to the next. Finishing the list matters more than finishing any one item on it.

The number is not there for tidiness. The difference between examining something and turning it over endlessly is that examining it has a last item.

And one thing to watch for while you write

This is a place where the lower edge of your band tends to show up — the one you were given the map for in the basin. Not "too much", but nothing: flat, distant, the pen not moving and no feeling about that either.

If it happens, the list is not the priority. Put it down, stand up, and put the support back under yourself; the writing keeps until a day when it can actually be encoded. Twelve is a limit, not a quota.

This is the first closed list of the expedition. There will be two more at the pier, and by then the form will be familiar.

One marker on the map is still lit, and it is a short one. Do not close the grotto here – what has just been opened needs something to close it.

Open the paper notebook and make the third mark: today's date, «Sector III – Hollow Stone Grotto», and one line in your own hand about what you actually did here. One line, not a report.

There is also a line to keep open all week: one crutch a day, named and written down, nothing removed.
