Field course โ„–1 ยท Anxiety Self-paced ยท Yours for good

Pack for the Expedition Six locations ยท one route

01

You were told to calm down first. That rule is the heaviest thing in your bag. This is a six-compartment course for people who have read everything about anxiety and still can’t send the email, take the flight, or sit through the meeting.

Built on exposure science, ACT and interoception research โ€” and honest about the parts that don’t work. Nothing here promises you zero anxiety, because nothing honest can.

ยง 00 โ€” before anything goes in

Take one thing out first

A technique turns into avoidance the moment it becomes a condition. Then the brain never learns that the situation was safe โ€” only that you survived because of the breathing, the checking, the crutch.

Leave at the trailhead
  • “I’ll go once I’ve calmed down.”
  • “If it starts, I have to stop it immediately.”
  • Zero anxiety as the signal that you’re ready.
  • The body scan that never ends: am I calm yet?
  • And its mirror โ€” never relaxing again. Still control.
Carry instead
  • “I take a few slow breaths and I walk in anyway.”
  • “I notice it, come back to the room, and keep talking.”
  • “I’m not trying to reach zero. I’m steadying myself while I move.”
  • Attention travelling outward, to the task, not inward, to the scan.
  • A sensation that is unpleasant โ€” and not a verdict.

Relaxation is an option, not a requirement.

ยง 00b โ€” two poles, one question

Am I using this to keep going โ€” or to put off starting?

Poles don’t take the hill away. They let you keep walking while it’s steep. Same breath, same grounding, same cold water โ€” what decides is the function, never the technique.

Gear
  • Helps you stay in the situation.
  • Doesn’t ask you to be calm first.
  • Attention travels outward, to the task.
  • The goal is to move alongside the anxiety.
  • What you learn: I can be here even when this is switched on.
Crutch
  • Lets you leave the situation.
  • Requires you to settle down first.
  • Attention keeps checking inward: am I calm yet?
  • The goal is to remove the anxiety now.
  • What you learn: I got away with it because of the technique.

This is the spine of the course. Take it now, whether or not you ever buy anything.

Work out what you’re actually dealing with

Anxiety is the gap between how dangerous this feels and how able you feel to meet it. Both numbers move.

Take breathing off its pedestal

Slow breathing settles some people and makes others feel short of air. You’ll find out which one you are.

ยง 07 โ€” straight answers

Six promises this course won’t make

  • Zero anxiety. Not as a goal, not as a line in the copy, not as a condition for getting on with your life.
  • Provocation on your own. Nothing here asks you to hyperventilate, hold your breath to exhaustion, or plunge into ice as a treatment.
  • Self-diagnosis by nerve. You won’t be told which branch of your vagus is switched on. The three states are a language, not a scan.
  • “The anxiety centre.” The amygdala handles fast threat appraisal, the anterior insula bodily signals and uncertainty โ€” in overlapping networks. Neither is the seat of anxiety.
  • Studies without their limits. Every claim comes with its sample size. Where the evidence is thin, the lesson says thin.
  • A replacement for care. Education and structured practice. It sits alongside therapy and medication, never instead of them.
ยง 08 โ€” the one piece of kit that does nothing alone

The signal mirror

Every other thing in the pack you use on yourself. This one only works when you point it at someone else โ€” useless facing inward, and it carries further than a shout.

Who should carry this pack

This is for you if
  • You’ve tried the breathing apps and the reassurance, and your life is still getting narrower.
  • You want the mechanism, not affirmations โ€” and you’d rather be told what isn’t proven.
  • You can function day to day, but the cost is rising.
  • You’ve done CBT and it felt like homework with no engine behind it.
  • You’re willing to move before you feel ready.
Not this, not yet
  • You’re in acute crisis, or you’re not safe. Reach a clinician or a crisis line first.
  • You want something that switches a panic attack off in sixty seconds. Nobody honest sells that.
  • You have new or unexplained physical symptoms. Get those looked at first.
  • You’re after a replacement for therapy or medication. This sits alongside both.

What the evidence actually says

Every number below is in the course with its sample size attached. Where a finding is preliminary, the lesson says preliminary.

Slow breathing47 healthy participants. Breathing at 5.5 a minute with an equal in-to-out ratio raised several heart-rate-variability measures and subjective relaxation. Lin et al., 2014.
Resonance17 studies, 810 participants. Broadly favourable psychological and physiological changes โ€” alongside heterogeneous protocols and a stated need for more data. Vukojeviฤ‡ et al., 2024.
Box breathing66 participants. Box breathing and prolonged exhalation both softened subjective anxiety and heart-rate rise before a stress test; HRV and cortisol did not separate. McAllister et al., 2026.
InteroceptionFour online sessions, 85% completion. The RISE programme improved noticing, not-worrying, self-regulation and body trust, holding at three months. Smith, 2023.
Panic38 participants, randomised. An interoceptive-exposure component beat breathing retraining on panic frequency and severity โ€” with notable attrition in the follow-up.
Dose120 participants. Intense interoceptive exposure outperformed low-dose; some low-intensity variants were followed by more frequent fear sensitisation.
Uncertainty76 fMRI studies, meta-analysed. Especially consistent anterior-insula involvement under uncertainty โ€” which is not the same as anxiety living in the insula.
ยง 11 โ€” questions before departure
Is this therapy?
No. It’s education and structured practice, built on the same evidence base clinicians use โ€” CBT, ACT, exposure and inhibitory learning, interoceptive training. It works well alongside therapy. It does not replace it, and it can’t assess you.
How long does it take?
Self-paced, one compartment at a time. Most people take six to ten weeks. The films are short and the practices run one to seven minutes; the time goes into the work in compartment five, which is the part that actually changes things.
Is anything here going to make me feel worse?
Nothing in this course asks you to trigger a panic attack or push yourself into a state you can’t step out of. Every practice is optional and comes with the conditions under which it stops being useful, and compartment one opens with a briefing on when to skip one entirely.
Will it stop my panic attacks?
Nobody honest can promise that. What the evidence supports is narrower and more useful: meeting feared bodily sensations, in a safe dose, tends to change what those sensations mean โ€” from “dangerous” to “unpleasant and survivable.” That shift is what reduces attacks, and it takes repetition.
I’ve done CBT and it didn’t stick.
Then compartment five is the reason to be here. Classic protocols work at lowering the threat response; they train tolerance more than discrimination. This course treats the flattened gradient between safe and dangerous as the target.
What exactly do I get, and for how long?
All six compartments, the guided audio, the animated breathing practices, the printable field kit and every worksheet, plus every update. Yours for good, no live calls. [Edit this answer with your own terms and refund policy.]
Cleared for departure

Go anyway

You don’t have to feel calm to leave. You have to be carrying the right things โ€” and to have put down the one rule that’s been keeping you at the trailhead.

This course is educational and is not a substitute for medical or psychological care, diagnosis, or treatment. It is not suitable as a stand-alone response to acute crisis. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line in your country. New, unexplained or worsening physical symptoms should be assessed by a doctor before they are treated as anxiety. Nothing here should be used to change a prescription without the clinician who wrote it.
